Weekly Updates 2021-22 School Year

5 Things to Know This Week

December 2, 2021

1. Parkland, like many employers across the country, is experiencing a worker shortage in several areas, but one that we need to bring your attention to now is in Transportation.  There may be days in the future where we can't source enough drivers to cover all of the early morning runs to PHS, OMS and/or SMS.  For this reason, we want to make parents aware that a phone call could come in from the District around 6 AM on any given day that will announce a 60-90-minute delay in transportation to SMS, OMS or PHS on a particular bus.  The bus runs will be rotated so that this should only affect a particular student one time.  Students will be able to make up any missed work in a similar manner as if they had a doctor's appointment.  Please make sure that your contact information is up to date with your school's main office.  Thank you for your patience.

2. Snow Day Guidance - the first snowflakes are in the air and you may be wondering about future snow days!  Click here for the guidance related to how we will handle the next snow day and how Flexible Instructional Days may come into play this year.

computer science week

3. Parkland is celebrating Computer Science Week with an Hour of Code Event - The week begins on Monday and we've compiled a list of great spots on the web where children can dive deeper into the world of computer science or attend Parkland's own virtual event.  Get all the details here.

4. Dr. Madson's Superintendent Podcast Episode #3 entitled PHS101 is available now!  Listen here to learn all about what it is like to be a student today inside Parkland High School.  Special thanks to Principal Moniz and the students above for participating in the conversation (from left to right): Rishika Rohatgi, Demi Olatilo, Jack Brubacher, and Emily Bachl.

5. PHS Student Store Will be Open for Holiday Shopping – Dec 11 and 18, 10 AM-1 PM. CASH AND CHECKS ONLY! No credit or debit cards will be accepted.  The Staff Tribute Gift Card sale is open through Dec 13!  Purchase a $10 gift card for your favorite teacher or staff member and the Parkland Education Foundation will deliver the gift cards directly to them with your personal message.  Click on this link to pay for and place your order(s).

Parents/Guardians received an email to participate in a BrightBytes Technology survey this past Wednesday. The email is legitimate, and we encourage you to participate in the survey so that we can gather information about tech needs and resources that are available at home for our students. Thank you!
