EQUITY FORUM IS APRIL 22 - Mark your calendars for our first-ever Community Equity Forum!  You'll hear from students, staff and community members with updates on our culture, curriculum and communication goals that are part of the District's Equity and Inclusion Plan. Our panelists will take your questions LIVE during the session which will be broadcasted on our website here: https://www.parklandsd.org/about-us/equity-and-inclusion.

2. GRADUATION/PROM – Parkland High School is pleased to announce that Prom will take place on May 8 at an outdoor space at Bethlehem’s SteelStacks and that Graduation has been scheduled for June 8 (location is still to be determined).  The Parkland Education Foundation will partner with Parkland High School to provide and deliver a graduation lawn sign to every senior again this year to celebrate their milestone!  If you'd like to make a gift to help support this initiative, please click here.

3. 5 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI were inducted into the Wall of Honor at PHS this week!  Inspire your students by sharing the PHS TV Studio videos that were created about each inductee!  Many of them share words of advice for our Parkland students in the videos.  They are each featured on the PHS TV Studio YouTube Channel at www.YouTube.com/ParklandTV.

THE ANTIQUE South Whitehall Township High School SCHOOL BENCH that was generously donated and featured in the Parkland Education Foundation's auction this week sold for more than $2,500!  It will be proudly displayed in the Pennsylvania School Boards Association's museum at their headquarters in Harrisburg, PA.

5. VACCINES AVAILABLE FOR ANYONE 16 and OLDER:  LVHN has opened vaccine appointments to everyone age 16 and older. You can schedule appointments here: https://bddy.me/3g3s5oT.  Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Department of Education issued the following statement this week:

The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) notified all COVID-19 vaccine providers to pause administering doses of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine until at least April 20 following a recommendation, made out of an abundance of caution, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the CDC and FDA, of the 6.8 million Americans who received the Johnson & Johnson's (Janssen) vaccine, there are six cases (<.00009%) of a rare blood clot in women between the ages of 18 and 48.

They have advised that if anyone received the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine within the last few weeks and have any health concerns, or if they develop severe headaches, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks of getting the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine, they should contact their health care provider.

The DOH is closely monitoring this situation and will provide additional information as it becomes available from the CDC and FDA.

1. NEXT WEEK is a 3-day week with Spring Break/Schools Closed Thursday, April 1 - Monday, April 5th.  The HYBRID Schedule for the next two weeks will be:

  • Monday, March 29th: A-L in-person instruction day
  • Tuesday, March 30th: M-Z in-person instruction day
  • Wednesday, March 31st: M-Z in-person instruction day

2. SECONDARY FAMILY UPDATE - We are happy to report that the remainder of Parkland’s staff, including all secondary teachers, bus drivers, food service and administrative staff, are being given the opportunity to be vaccinated on March 27 and 28.  However, transmission levels remain at the SUBSTANTIAL designation in Lehigh County.  At that level, the Center for Disease Control recommends that we keep secondary students 6 feet apart to the greatest extent possible. (3 feet of social distancing to the maximum extent feasible is recommended for elementary students).  We are able to greatly comply with this measure in the current TWO DAYS PER WEEK of IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION model, but this becomes far less feasible if we were to bring all students back for more days of in-person learning. We will continue to monitor transmission levels on the PA COVID-19 Monitoring Dashboard which updates each Friday.  This will help us make a determination about bringing back 6-12th grade students for more days of in-person instruction.  We plan to provide you with another update in two weeks on April 9, 2021.

3. NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR A SUPERINTENDENT'S PARKLAND PRIDE AWARD - Students, parents, residents and staff, are invited to nominate a staff person or volunteer for a Superintendent’s Parkland Pride Award Program which recognizes outstanding employee and volunteer achievements within Parkland School District. Don’t delay - nominations are due April 15th! More info here.

4. Dr. MICHELLE MINOTTI APPOINTED ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT - The District was pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Minotti from Springhouse Principal to Assistant Superintendent, to take effect on July 1, 2021.  Read more here.

5. The Parkland Education Foundation CELEBRATE INNOVATION GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE is coming up next week on April 1, 2021!  Only staff can apply, but parents and community members are welcome to collaborate with staff on ideas.

1. ELEMENTARY DEADLINE TO SWITCH LEARNING MODELS IS NOON TODAY.  Please reference the email sent on March 12 to find the form link to switch learning models.  You do not need to do anything if you wish for your child to stay in their current model (either HYBRID or ONLINE) starting April 12th when all Parkland Elementary Schools will move to 4 days of in-person instruction for the HYBRID Group.  Parkland ONLINE will still be operating in the same manner when the HYBRID transition occurs on April 12. Please contact your child's school office if you have any questions.

2. CALENDAR UPDATE: There will NO LONGER be an Early Dismissal Day on April 30, 2021.  Instead, it will be a full school day. This was done to maximize in-person instructional time with students.

1. ELEM ANNOUNCEMENT to INCREASE IN-PERSON LEARNING to 4 DAYS -  A first wave of 536 vaccines were allocated to Parkland Staff this week as part of Governor Tom Wolf's program to use the first 94,000 Johnson and Johnson vaccines received in PA for educators. This was a huge catalyst for the big announcement that Parkland will increase in-person learning for HYBRID students to four days per week starting on April 12th.  An update to all parents, K-12, was sent via email today.  Please make sure you read through it for important information.

2. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME BEGINS this Sunday.  Remember to set your clocks one hour forward.

3. MIDDLE SCHOOL REPORT CARDS will be posted in Home Access Center (HAC) on Thursday, March 18, at 12 noon.

4. JOB/VOLUNTEER BOARD - Our students will find some great job and volunteer opportunities to apply for. Here is the link for the Virtual Job/Volunteer Board that was shared with Juniors and Seniors at school over the past two weeks.

5. NEW CDC GUIDELINES about some new freedoms we can expect to enjoy safely once fully vaccinated were posted this week here.

3/5/21

1. Calendar Alert for Next WeekFriday, March 12 is a Teacher In-Service Day.  The teachers will be at school, but the students are OFF/OFFLINE!  A-L Hybrid will be in-person on Monday and Tuesday and M-Z Hybrid will be in-person on Wednesday and Thursday (reference the Hybrid Learning Calendars below) next week.

2. Educator Vaccines - On Wednesday, Governor Tom Wolf announced that the first shipment of the newly approved Johnson and Johnson vaccines will be allocated to educators!  We expect a large portion of our staff will have the opportunity to get vaccinated as early as next week.

3. Don't Let Down Your Guard - The travel mitigation measures that were in place across Pennsylvania when traveling out of state were lifted on Monday.  However, please note that Lehigh County remains in the SUBSTANTIAL SPREAD OF THE VIRUS category. To help keep our schools open and to move into MODERATE SPREAD, our community at large should continue to practice wearing a mask (that fits properly) when socializing with anyone outside the household, physical distancing, and good handwashing hygiene (wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and use sanitizer when soap and water is not possible).

4. Weather Emergency Preparedness Drills, required per Pennsylvania law, will occur during the month of March for students and staff and help us to be prepared for emergencies.  This drill is our annual opportunity to review with students, faculty and staff the appropriate protocols for a weather-related emergency.

5. The 9th Parkland Education Foundation Distinguished Alumni Gala will occur virtually on April 14th.  Please consider supporting the event which is the Foundation's largest fundraiser of the year. Everyone who purchases a ticket will receive a box of home-made goodies from local businesses:  Josh Early, Baked, Warm Sugar, Sugar Mere, Trixie's Treats and A-Treat!  Click on the picture below to make a gift or purchase a ticket!
