5 Things to Know This Week

 

1. The Hybrid calendars have been updated to include more in-person learning since we lost so many in-person days to snow!  eLearning Wednesdays on March 31 and April 7 will now be in-person learning days for Hybrid students and staff and M-Z learners will be in-person on Tuesday, March 30.  The changes are highlighted in yellow on the hybrid calendars as follows:

2. Kindergarten Registration is happening now and we are asking all families who wish to register their children in Parkland Schools for the fall to register by March 18th by calling or emailing their respective school listed here.  Please share with any neighbors who have young children!

4. FREE 7-week Teen Parenting Seminar - We announced this on social media earlier this week and the program filled up quickly.  So... The Center for Humanistic added more classes.  You can sign up for the 7-week Tuesday night class here.

5. CDC Mask Update - N95, two masks, paper masks?  With so much information swirling about, you may be wondering if your mask is providing you the best protection from COVID-19.  Check out this mask update for details on the "do's and don'ts" surrounding masks.

1. The 2021-22 School Calendar is here and August 30th has been set as the first day of school!  Note that for next year, Flexible Instruction Days (FID) have been added.  To read more about what a FID is and how it will affect the calendar, click on the Parent/Student Questions and Answers document.

2.Next week, HYBRID GROUP A-L will attend school on Monday and Tuesday, everyone will be in eLearning on Wednesday, and HYBRID GROUP M-Z will attend school on Thursday and Friday.

3. WORLD LANGUAGE WEEK is next week!  There are so many virtual activities...Post a pic in the travel album, partake in International Trivia Night, make a NEW recipe, or hear from a Guest Speaker from the Peace Corps.  Our amazing teachers have put together these wonderful virtual experiences for students.  Check it all out here!

4. Head over to the Parkland School District Facebook page and share a photo of your family wearing Parkland STRONG or Parkland Spiritwear under yesterday's post and you can win Parkland STRONG gear!

5. Check out this Parenting, Media and Everything in Between Blog by Common Sense Media featuring the "Parent's Ultimate Guide...” series (TikTok, SnapChat, YouTube, Fortnite, etc.).  Parkland recently recertified its partnership with Common Sense to bring you helpful content.

REMINDERS

ALL 6th and 7th GRADE FAMILIES should have their course selections noted in Home Access Center (HAC) by the end of the day today for next school year.

1.  Today, Parkland High School and Elementary Report Cards became available in Home Access Center (HAC). Log in at http://bit.do/ParklandHAC and if you have trouble accessing your account, please email HAC@parklandsd.org.  

2. School will be closed on Friday, February 12 and Monday, February 15 in observance of the President's Day Holiday Weekend.  If between now and next Thursday we have another event that would constitute a full school closure, Friday would become a remote learning day (no in-person instruction) for all students and staff.  A-L Hybrid learners will attend on Monday and Tuesday next week and M-Z Hybrid learners will attend on Thursday with everyone in eLearning on Wednesday.  The following week, A-L Hybrid learners will attend on Tuesday and M-Z Hybrid Learners will attend on Thursday and Friday with everyone in eLearning on Wednesday. 

3. Parkland is pleased to announce it as continued its commitment to digital citizenship and media literacy by completing  recertification as a Common Sense District.  With certification comes access to great content such as a Parents' Ultimate Guide to YouTube and Help Tweens and Teens Clean Up Their Social Media Feeds to promote positive behavior and  mental health.

4. Did you show your guidance counselor some love this week?  It's National Counselors Week.  It is also  #LovetheBus Month.  If you have the best bus driver and/or guidance counselor, give them a shout out on the District Facebook page this weekend.  #ShareSomeParklandPride

5. Lehigh Valley Health Network produced some super short videos that dispel COVID-19 vaccine myths and answers to frequently asked questions.  You can view them here.

AN AFTERSCHOOL CODING CLUB is being offered by PHS students for students in grades 5-8 on Wednesdays starting in February (virtually). No experience required! Interested students should register at this link by February 17.

1.  Today, Middle School report cards became available in Home Access Center (HAC). Log in at http://bit.do/ParklandHAC and if you have trouble accessing your account, please email HAC@parklandsd.org.  Elementary and High School report cards will post in HAC next Friday, February 5, at 12 noon.

2. Winter weather may be approaching our area early next week.  Please remember that if a Virtual Snow Day is called, students should check Schoology to connect with ALL of their classes/teachers for assignments, instructions and to see what is expected.  

3. An afterschool computer CODING CLUB is being offered by PHS students for students in grades 5-8 on Wednesdays starting in February (virtually). No experience required! Interested students should register at this link by February 17.

4. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION and NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION for next year is underway!  If you know someone who has a child turning 5 before September 1st or has been in another kindergarten program but wants to attend Parkland in the fall for 1st grade, please encourage them to call their sending school and send them this link:  https://www.parklandsd.org/schools/kindergarten1st-grade-registration

5. We all made it to the halfway point of this school year, so we thought it was a good time to share some refresher Tips for Parenting During COVID-19 and Tips to Help Teens Cope During COVID-19.  You are not alone and neither are your children. You can always email us at ParklandGuidance@parklandsd.org for assistance. And, for PHS parents, remember that you can make a referral to the Student Assistance Program for help with students who are experiencing barriers to learning. Many resources appear on our coronavirus webpage.

 

1/22/21

1. Today was the last day of the first semester!  That means that Monday is the start of a new semester.  Secondary students will need to follow a new secondary daily schedule so please remind your students to be mindful of this.  Middle School report cards are due out next Friday and Elem and HS report cards will be out the following Friday in Home Access Center (HAC).

2. This week, during the regularly scheduled School Board Meeting, the Parkland Health and Safety PlanPDF download was updated.  The changes are highlighted in yellow.

3. Emergency Drill Letter to Families - Click here for a letter about the need to practice various types of emergency drills again during the 2nd semester.

4.  Parkland's Athletic Livestream is up and running as winter sports got underway this week!  Thanks to the Parkland Education Foundation for funding the equipment and to the PHS TV Studio for all of the coordination and broadcasting!

5. Looking for some good family dinner conversation?  The Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) collaborated with educators, employers, and local governments to produce a Hot Careers Guide that spans 8 major employment sectors in the Lehigh Valley economy. This guide offers students a clear visual representation of career opportunities and salary potential here in the Valley. Check it out at www.lehighvalley.org/hotcareers

1/15/22

1. COVID-19 vaccines are making their way into the Lehigh Valley and we've posted vaccine Moderna and Pfizer Vaccine Fact Sheets and FAQ's to our coronavirus resource webpage as well as information about NEW COVID VARIANTS. Teachers are in the 1B phase group and are expected to start receiving appointments to get vaccinated very soon.

2. On Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Parkland Schools will be closed for students.  A-L Hybrid learners will attend school on Tuesday and Wednesday and M-Z Hybrid learners will attend on Thursday and Friday next week.  There is an early dismissal on Friday, January 22 - HS/MS at 1 PM and Elems at 1:45 PM. 

3. Next Friday marks the end of the first semester.  We've posted the 2nd semester elementary and secondary HYBRID calendars.  Secondary schools will move to a per day cycle day, with Wednesday being one of the cycle days. The elementary cycle remains unchanged.  eLearn Wednesdays appear throughout the semester on most 4-day weeks, while still balancing the A – L and M – Z student days.

4. Winter Sports are underway.  While fans are limited, we are pleased to announce that middle school and high school home basketball, wrestling and swimming events will be livestreamed.  Click here to get to our livestream page, grab some popcorn, and cheer on your favorite athletes from your couch.  

5. Ever wondered what it'd be like to attend Yale University?  Here is a link to Open Yale Courses that include a full set of class lectures produced in high-quality video and accompanied by course materials.

  1. Parkland Schools will continue with our current Hybrid/Online mode of instruction for the second semester and new hybrid schedules will be shared next week. The end of the semester is January 22nd.
  2. Schools will be closed on Monday, January 18th, in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and there will be an early dismissal for students on Friday, January 22nd.
  3. PHS made online Course Selection Presentations for parents of 8-11th graders to help them make choices for next school year.  You can view all presentations from this link: https://tinyurl.com/PHSvirtualparentnight.
  4. Our region’s healthcare professionals have started receiving COVID-19 vaccinations and both health networks have put out vaccine FAQs here: St. Luke’s and Lehigh Valley Health Network.
  5. PHS will be holding a VIRTUAL JOB FAIR this year for all 11th and 12th graders interested in gaining employment, job shadows, internships and/or volunteer opportunities in the coming months.  Any interested employers who would like to submit information pertaining to the opportunity should contact Allison McPeek in the PHS Guidance office at mcpeeka@parklandsd.org and include a description of the opportunity, overview of your organization and contact information.
