Elementary Choice 2021-22

May 24, 2021

As we are gearing up to the start of the school year, we are asking our families to make a FINAL DECISION regarding the 2021-2022 school year.  The options for students will include a five day a week face to face program OR PSD Online, a full virtual program taught by PSD teachers.   Before completing the survey, please be sure to read all of the information in this correspondence before making your FINAL decision and completing the survey (Survey link is at the bottom of this page).

What criteria will be used to determine if a student is eligible to participate and stay enrolled in PSD Online?

  • Students must connect synchronously, with cameras on, at assigned times during the school day.

  • Work must be completed and submitted by the due dates assigned by the teacher.

  • Attendance will incorporate both synchronous participation during class and work completion.  If attendance issues arise, a student may be asked to return to the school in person.

What is different about PSD Online for the 2021-2022 school year?

  • PSD Online will be offered in grades K - 5. However, classes need to have at least 18 students in  a grade level to run.  If there are less than 18 interested students, an outside cyber program will be utilized.

  • Students will participate in a virtual setting with a teacher that may be from a different PSD elementary school than the child’s home school. Students enrolled in the grade level online program will be participating in the program with students from other elementary schools within PSD.

  • Students will be required to complete school work in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, as well as each Encore class.  Work completion will factor into a student’s grade and attendance.

  • A responsible adult/Learning Coach is necessary for our younger learners in order to keep an organized schedule and ensure students are successful with at home learning. The “Learning Coach” will ensure that the child is completing the work independently in an optimal learning environment away from distractions.

  • Once students commit to the PSD Online program, they will need to remain in PSD Online until the semester ends in January.  If a student is not meeting requirements of the program, a meeting with the student and parents will be scheduled to discuss potential changes that will result in the best placement for the student.

    • NOTE: If an online student chooses to return to in-person learning at the end of the first semester, they may not have the same classroom and encore teachers that they had for their online classes.

  • PSD Online Students in grades 3-5 must come into the building to take PSSA assessments in the spring. PSD online students may also be asked to come into the building for other tests, if your child’s teacher and core team members determine it necessary.

  • If a student is not successful in PSD online (attendance, grades, incomplete work), they may be asked to come into the school to complete work and/or return to the school in person for the remainder of the school year.

Other Considerations

  • A parent’s role in online education is important due to the increased autonomy and self-motivation required to be successful in an online program.  Online learning is more effective when parents take an active role in their children’s education.

  • PSD Online students will be able to participate in extracurricular activities, as long as the Health and Safety Plans for the district are adhered to.

Online Learning Readiness Quiz for Students

Online learning can be a great solution for some students; however, online learning courses are not for everyone.  Before making a final decision for an instructional model next year, students should consider these statements.  If a student answers “NO” to a few of these statements, it may be best for the student to choose the in person model for instruction.

  1. I am able to work independently and I am accountable for my work.

  2. I am self-motivated; I consider myself to be a self-starter.

  3. I am a good ‘time manager’ with good organizational skills and a strong ability to structure my time effectively.

  4. I am capable of self-discipline.  I persevere through difficult tasks without giving up.

  5. I have good study habits and good reading skills.

  6. I can prepare and study for exams without prodding.

  7. I am comfortable voicing concerns to teachers.  I could easily email a teacher with questions about my class.

PSD Online Interest Survey:

We are asking only those families who are planning for their child to participate in PSD Online to complete this survey; IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE THE SURVEY, YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED TO BE COMING BACK IN PERSON FOR THE START OF THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR. There will be no changes after the survey closes. This survey must be completed by Friday, June 4, 2021, in order to participate in PSD Online in the 2021-2022 school year.

Please complete one survey for every student in your family who you'd like to enroll online.
