Secondary Choice 2021-2022

July 28, 2021

What criteria will be used to determine if a student is eligible to participate and stay enrolled in PSD Online?

  • Students must connect synchronously, with cameras on, at assigned times during the school day.

  • Work must be completed and submitted by the due dates assigned by the teacher.

  • Attendance will incorporate both synchronous participation during class and work completion.  If attendance issues arise, a student may be asked to return to the school in person.

What is different about PSD Online for the 2021-2022 school year?

  • Core courses (English, Math, Science, Social Studies and World Language) will run as full online sections, when feasible.  This past year, students in person were in the same class as online students.  We are making every effort to have sections of all online learners and sections with all in person students.

  • With smaller numbers choosing PSD online, your child may be in an online class with students from the other middle school.  For example, a student who lives in Springhouse territory may have an Orefield online English teacher that includes online students from both middle schools.

  • Once students commit to the PSD Online program, they will need to remain in PSD Online until the semester ends in January.  If a student is not meeting requirements of the program, a meeting with the student and parents will be scheduled to discuss potential changes that will result in the best placement for the student.

    • NOTE: If an online student chooses to return to in-person learning at the end of the first semester, they may not have the same teachers that they had for their online classes.

  • PSD Online High School Students must come into the building to take midterm, final and Keystone Exams. PSD Online Middle school students will be required to come into the building for PSSA testing and any Keystone Exams they qualify to take.  PSD online students may also be asked to come into the building for other tests, if the teachers and guidance counselor determine it’s necessary.

  • Some courses will not run online during the 2021-2022 school year, due to lessons learned as we worked our way through last spring and this school year.  Please see the following linked documents that outline the courses that will not run and the reason for not running the courses online.

  • If a student is not successful in PSD online (attendance, grades, incomplete work), they may be asked to come into the school to complete work and/or return to the school in person for the remainder of the school year.

Other Considerations

  • A parent’s role in online education is important due to the increased autonomy and self-motivation required to be successful in an online program.  Online learning is more effective when parents take an active role in their children’s education.

  • PSD Online students will be able to participate in extracurricular activities, as long as the Health and Safety Plans for the district are adhered to.

Online Learning Readiness Quiz for Students

Online learning can be a great solution for some students, however online learning courses are not for everyone.  Before making a final decision for an instructional model next year, students should consider these statements.  If a student answers no to a few of these statements, it may be best for the student to choose the in person model for instruction.

  1. I am able to work independently and I am accountable for my work.

  2. I am self-motivated; I consider myself to be a self-starter.

  3. I am a good ‘time manager’ with good organizational skills and a strong ability to structure my time effectively.

  4. I am capable of self-discipline.  I persevere through difficult tasks without giving up.

  5. I have good study habits and always submit my assignments on time.

  6. I can prepare and study for exams without prodding and routinely earn a passing grade on tests and quizzes.

  7. I am comfortable voicing concerns to teachers.  I could easily email a teacher with questions about my course.

  8. I believe I am responsible for my own education and that ultimately, what I learn or do not learn is my responsibility.

The administration will review your past performance to determine whether online or in person learning will best serve your academic path towards Graduation.
