School Counseling Services at Ironton

Hello! My name is Carolyn Segata and I am the school counselor at Ironton Elementary School.  The 2021/2022 school year will be my 18th year in the school counseling profession and my 4th year as school counselor at Ironton. I am so grateful to be working with the students, parents and staff in this community! I hope you find this page helpful in understanding my role as a school counselor and the services that are provided. I am happy to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Feel free to contact me by phone or email.

Individual Counseling

School counselors meet with students individually to facilitate their growth and development through the exploration of feelings and issues that are impacting their life.  Students can request “talk time” with me by completing a form that is located in their classrooms or by asking their teacher.  Parents and teachers can also refer a student for individual counseling.

Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling (also known as “lunch bunch”) is a great way for students to learn together and develop a variety of skills in a small group setting. Students bring their lunch to my office where they learn skills in a fun environment! Common topics for small group are: social skills, anger management, mindfulness, coping skills and friendship.

Classroom Lessons

Large group instruction offers an opportunity to provide support to the largest number of students in the school.  This is one of my favorite things to do because I truly value the “face time” I get with all the students. Lessons presented are developmentally appropriate for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.  Topics include: conflict resolution, managing our emotions, anti bullying, including others, various social skills, mindfulness and career exploration.

Peer Mediation Program

Conflict resolution is a topic that is covered throughout the grade levels.  When students are in 5th grade, they are given the opportunity to apply to be a peer mediator.  Once chosen, students are trained in peaceful conflict resolution strategies where they sharpen their listening, communicating, interviewing and reflecting skills. When the training is complete, they report for duty on the playground to help our younger students work out their conflicts peacefully!

Team Roles

As the school counselor, I am a member of the following teams:

  • School Wide Positive Behavior Support
  • Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTII)
  • Student Assistance Program Manager (SAP)
  • PSSA Building Testing Coordinator
