NEWSLETTER - The Parkland Newsletter Fall Edition has just been released.  Look inside for District-wide updates including the Message from the Superintendent, our fall senior citizen course offerings, a recap of where the Class of 2023 is headed, PHS fall stage shows and much more!

ROMEO and JULIET - Tickets for the PHS Fall play that will take the stage Oct 10-13, 2024, will go on sale this Monday, September 9th at noon here. Admission prices are $10 for students and seniors (65+); $12 for adults.  For more information about our fall shows, click here.

ARTWORKS – This fall, Parkland Art Teachers will be holding adult art classes for community members. NEW YEAR, NEW MENU - Cafeteria  menus now include Chicken Cheesesteak, Hummus & Veggies, General Tso's, Teriyaki Chicken, Cheese Ravioli, and Meatball Subs. Elementary schools have two entrée options in addition to pizza and cereal meals daily. Secondary schools have two entrée options, pizza, wrap and salad specials daily. Breakfast is free for all PSD students every day.

ELEMENTARY WORLD LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE - Tomorrow is the last day to register for the Grade 2 or Grades 3-5 Elementary World Language after school programs.  Payment and forms must be received by tomorrow and can be dropped off at the Troxell Building, 2219 N. Finding Nemo - Finding Nemo, Jr. will be performed on the PHS main stage November 15 - 17, 2024.  Reserved seat tickets will go on sale this Monday at 12 noon.  Mark your calendar and bookmark this link to get your tickets as this is sure to be a popular event!

ALUMNI HOMECOMING FLOAT PARADE/ANDRE WILLIAMS BOOK SIGNING A THE FOOTBALL GAME - Parkland High School's Homecoming will feature a football game against Dieruff HS, a book signing with former NFL running back and Parkland graduate Andre Williams during the game (near the concessions stand), a halftime float parade involving alumni and student-built floats, and a celebration of the District's 75th Anniversary honoring former Homecoming Kings and Queens.  Don't miss this fun community-wide Parkland Pride event!

SAFE2SAY SOMETHING TRAINING - Parkland School District will conduct the annual Safe2Say Something training for middle and high schoolers in October.  Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program that teaches how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late.  Learn more at www.safe2saypa.org and District letter about the training here.

​HOMECOMING WEEKEND - Friday is School Spirit/PHS Swag Day.  The football game kicks off at 7 PM vs. Dieruff and will include a halftime performance by the PHS Marching Band as well as the annual Homecoming student-built float parade!  To help us celebrate the District's 75th Anniversary, we will be honoring former Homecoming Kings and Queens during the parade.  Parkland graduate/former NFL Running Back Andre Williams will be on site signing his newly released book, "After the Last Snap: When the Game Ends, Life Begins."

COMMUNITY ADVISORY COUNCIL (CAC) - Do you want to learn more about Parkland's Vision 2030 Project and its plans to address enrollment growth in grades 6-12?  Join the CAC for a presentation that includes renderings for the District's vision as it plans to expand the footprint of PHS and plan for changes to the Orefield Middle School site plan.  7 PM on October 17 in the Administration Center at 1210 Springhouse Rd.  This is a public meeting and all are welcome.

PHS UNHAUNTED HOUSE - Parkland High School National Honor Society students are hosting the annual Unhaunted House on October 24th from 6 - 7:30 PM in the PHS Library.  This is a fun event offered to Parkland Kindergarten - 3rd grade students. There will be pumpkin decorating, crafts, temporary tattoos, snacks, candy, and games. The entry fee is $5 and no pre-registration is required.  Simply come to the front entrance of Parkland High School to attend. 

CLASS OF 2025 UPDATE - The Parkland High School Counseling Office invites PHS families to attend “An Introduction to Financial Aid, Understanding the Basics,” to be held virtually on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 7 PM.  Greg Mitton, the Director of Financial Aid and Associate Dean of Admission at Muhlenberg College, will be breaking down the entire Financial Aid process.  Click here for the Zoom link and Pass Code (if necessary): 058303.  An additional resource, the Pennsylvania 2025-26 Student Aid Guide, provides a complete overview of the financial aid process with information on federal and state financial aid programs and services. Also, don't miss Senior Night at the PHS football game on Friday night vs. Whitehall - kickoff is at 7 PM!

There is evidence that Prom Night safety issues (drunk driving incidents, drug use, etc.) are dramatically reduced in communities that sponsor AFTER PROM programs. CHANGE FOR HURRICANE RELIEF - Parkland School District is collecting change for students in Asheville, NC, who are returning to school this week after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on their community a few weeks ago. Look for water jugs marked "Parkland Change for Hurricane Relief" at ticket booth entrances at this Friday night’s football District playoff game at home vs. Liberty. Collection efforts will continue in all Parkland school buildings next week. Thank you for your generosity!

GIRLS BASKETBALL CLINIC THIS SUNDAY - The PHS Girls’ Basketball Team and coaches will be holding a basketball clinic for girls in grades 2-9 this Sunday at 1 PM at Parkland High School. No registration required, $15 cash at the door.

LET READING LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE! The Laser Reader School Assembly Program will be held on Monday, November 11, from 6-7 PM at Orefield Middle School, with entry through the side entrance. The interactive program engages students in grades K-5 with activities designed to enhance reading focus and accommodate all reading levels. 2. ADVANCED MANUFACTURING APPRENTICE FIELD TRIP - 11th and 12th grade students with an interest in hands-on electronics work or post-high school full-time employment are invited to a VIP tour of B. Braun. The tour will include lunch and insights from an apprentice. Apprenticeship programs offer financial support for training and college education in a growing field in the Lehigh Valley. CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES - LET'S GO TROJANS! Parkland Boys Soccer will play in the State Championship this Saturday when they take on Cumberland Valley at Eagle View Middle School in Mechanicsburg. A student fan bus will be offered and depart from PHS at 7:30 AM and return after the game.    A pep rally at PHS will be held on Friday at 2 PM to hype up our Trojan Soccer Team for a victory!  Later Friday night, the Football Team will head into the District Championship vs. Emmaus at Whitehall High School at 7 PM.  Purchase tickets online here.

STUDENT vs. FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME - Parkland Staff will compete against senior students during the annual PHS Students vs. Faculty Basketball Game! The game will take place in the main gym at 7 PM tonight, November 14th! The Key Club is hosting this event to raise money to help the fight against pediatric cancer through Four Diamonds. Tickets are being sold at lunches for $5 each and will be sold at the door for $8 each.

LAST CHANCE SENIOR PHOTOS FOR YEARBOOK - Digital Photographic Imaging will hold in-school senior portrait sessions at PHS on 11/25, 26, and 27th from 9-11 AM for any seniors who have not yet had their free picture taken for the PHS Yearbook by Frank Mitman.  There is no appointment required.  Students can simply stop down in the auditorium lobby to have their picture taken.

The annual PHS School Store holiday sale will take place on two Saturdays: December 7 and December 14, from 12 pm to 3 pm. The sale will be held at the PHS student store inside the PHS Cafeteria. Customers can use the entrance by the cafeteria where they usually enter for sports events. Payment can only be made by cash or check.

MEET DR. The Marching Band has been invited to participate in the Philadelphia 6ABC Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Day Parade.  The parade is scheduled to run 9 AM-Noon and the Trojans are the last band in the parade, just before Santa's entrance.

OUR COLLECTIVE EFFORTS HELPED ASHEVILLE CITY SCHOOLS - Thank you to all of our students and staff and Parkland community members who generously donated to our change collection that will directly benefit Asheville City Schools and their ongoing hurricane relief efforts!  Our grand total that was collected in one week was $2,539.70!

The Marching Band has been invited to participate in the Philadelphia 6ABC Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Day Parade.  The parade is scheduled to run 9 AM-Noon and the Trojans are the last band in the parade, just before Santa's entrance.

Coolest Moves on the Court - The Parkland Dance Team is hosting its Coolest Moves on the Court Clinic on Monday, January 20th from 8 AM - 12 PM.  Young aspiring dancers in Kindergarten - 5th grade will learn a routine that they'll have the opportunity to perform on the court during the PHS Varsity Basketball game on Tuesday, January 21st at 7 PM. $35 per participant includes a snack and a t-shirt. Register by December 20 here.

CAC - The Parkland Community Advisory Council invites Parkland community members to their December meeting when they will be discussing Mental Health with Dr. Matthew Carlson, Director of Student Services.  You will also get to know Mrs. Jaleen Mendez, the District's new school social worker. CAC will meet on Thursday, December 19th at 6:00 PM at the Parkland High School Library.   All are welcome.

CHEERLEADING CLINIC - The Parkland Cheer team is hosting a youth cheer clinic on Sunday, January 12th from 9 AM - 12 noon at the Parkland High School Auxiliary Gym. More details and information is at this link. ADULT ART CLASSES ARE OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT - Our art teaching staff is offering three new art classes for adults this winter that will start in February.  Check them out at this link and be sure to register by the January 24th deadline if you are interested.

TRANSITIONS - The New Year will bring about transition information from the middle and high schools.  Your child will begin to be able to select their own courses starting in 7th Grade. There will be a VIRTUAL REFRESHER PARENT MEETING for current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students about the course selection process on Monday, Jan. 13th at 7 PM.  Parents of 8th graders should plan to attend IN PERSON on January 14th for the Class of 2029 Parent Meeting to be held in the PHS Auditorium at 7 PM to learn about the course selection process for high school. We will also begin registering incoming kindergartners in the New Year!  If you know someone turning 5 prior to September 1, please tell them to call their neighborhood elementary school in January to begin the registration process.

COMMUNITY RESOURCE FAIR INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE - Parkland's 3rd Annual Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 9 AM to 12 PM, in Parkland High School's cafeteria. This free event brings together local social service agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community partners to help families connect with valuable resources. Nonprofits are invited to reserve a free table today by filling out the short form linked here no later than February 14, 2025 (or until we reach full capacity). 

YOUTH BASKETBALL NIGHT - Come cheer on the Parkland Girls Basketball teams as they take on Pleasant Valley!

• JV Game: 5:30 PM
• Varsity Game: 7:00 PM
• Location: PHS Main Gym

Free admission for all youth players (ages 12 and under) wearing their youth team shirt/jersey. Parkland students are always free to regular season games with their student ID. Free 8x10 photos of the varsity team will be given out, and varsity players will autograph photos immediately after the game.

Parkland Swimming is hosting a "Future Trojan Night" during the Parkland vs. Nazareth home swimming and diving meet on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, from 4 - 7 p.m. in the Parkland High School Natatorium.  All Parkland 7th and 8th graders interested in joining the team when they enter high school are invited to watch the meet and experience the excitement of being on the Parkland High School team. They'll also be treated to complimentary pizza with the seniors, and get to hear from them about their experience on the team.

 

GIANT FEEDING KIDS - When you shop your local GIANT Grocery store between January 1 - March 31, you can round up your toal to the nearest dollar at the register to support Parkland's efforts to eliminate student hunger. The funds raised will go directly to Parkland REACH to feed students and their families.

NO SCHOOL MONDAY/EARLY DISMISSAL ON FRIDAY - Next week, we have no school on Monday as it will be a Professional Development Day for staff.  On Friday, OMS, SMS and PHS will dismiss at 11 AM and Elementary Schools will dismiss at 11:45 AM.

BROWN BAG LUNCHES OFFERED ON EARLY DISMISSAL DAY - January 24th is an early dismissal day. Parents/students may order a bagged lunch that day.  Bagged lunches will consist of turkey and cheese sandwiches, fruit, vegetable, and beverage and will be charged at their normal rate to students' cafeteria accounts. On the early dismissal day, your child's bagged lunch will be picked up by your child at the cafeteria near dismissal time.  Order forms must be filled out online and are due by noon on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. You only need to complete a form if you are requesting a lunch. Questions can be directed to Food Services office at 610-351-5670.

COFFEE WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT - Meet Dr. Madson, Superintendent, over a cup of coffee at the Truffle Bar, 5831 Tilghman St, Allentown, PA 18104, on Wednesday, January 29, from 9-10 AM.  Feel free to stop by to say hello, ask a question, or get to know the school district leader.  Please let us know if you plan to attend by filling out this brief form so that we can plan the logistics for the event.  

FREE FRENCH ACTIVITY FAIR for 4th and 5th graders is at PHS on Saturday, January 25 when French Honor Society students will host fun activities related to French culture in the Parkland High School Cafeteria from 10 AM - 12 Noon. Sign up here by Friday, January 17th.

LAST DAY TO ORDER CAP AND GOWN AT THIS PRICE is tomorrow!  Seniors need a cap and gown to march in the Commencement Ceremony on June 4th at PPL Center.  Order your cap and gown here.  The current total price of the cap, gown, tassel unit is $37.96 until January 17, 2025.  There will be a price increase of $10 after that date.

EARLY DISMISSAL ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 24 - OMS, SMS and PHS will dismiss at 11 AM and Elementary Schools will dismiss at 11:45 AM.

REMINDER FOR CURRENT 9-11TH GRADE- Current 9-11th grade Parkland High School students should complete their course registration selections by Friday, January 24. Throughout the next few weeks, counselors will meet with students during English classes to finalize the course selection process.  All the tools you need to research and plan course opportunities as well as instructions on how to select them in HAC can be found on our website at https://phs.parklandsd.org/students/digital-coursebook.

OPEN SWIM AND GYM - The PHS Pool and Gym will be open to Parkland residents on the following Sundays thanks to a sponsorship by South Whitehall Township Parks and Recreation Department:  Feb. 9th, March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, & 30th from 1-5 PM. Attendees MUST have an account in the Township's Online Recreation Portal to verify Parkland residency.  There is NO Registration and NO Fee for this program.  NOTE: This program is for recreational family and individual swimming and recreational pick-up basketball or volleyball. Organized group activities are NOT permitted during this time.

SPRING MUSICAL TICKETS GO ON SALE JANUARY 27 - This year's show is Les Misérables, the world’s longest running musical and a true modern classic based on Victor Hugo's novel and featuring one of the most memorable scores of all time.  The show will be held April 2 - 6, 2025 at PHS. WORLD LANGUAGE WEEK is a popular tradition designed to increase global awareness. It takes place all over Parkland High School next week!  In addition to a Door Decorating Contest that celebrates cultures from around the world, students can sign up to participate in a Chopped International Competition, a Bocce Ball Tournament, a Scavenger Hunt and Dance Lessons. International dress is encouraged every day of the week and various language clubs will be selling food and international crafts in the cafeteria.  

CELEBRATE OUR ARTISTS - Congratulations to the Parkland students who have received Gold, Silver, and Honorable Mention Keys at the 2025 Regional Scholastic Art Awards. Sixty-six talented students will be honored at an artist reception this March at Kutztown University. Gold Key recipients will also advance to the national competition. Well done to all awardees!

Huge Clothing/Toy Drive March 15 - Declutter your closets and plan to bring your donations to Parkland High School when you visit the Community Resource Fair. 12,549 Food Items Collected - Thank you for all of the generous donations that you sent in as part of this year's District-wide Food Drive!  The food will go to the SMS, OMS and PHS food pantries and given to families in need over spring break. Overages are being donated to Parkland CARES who presented a program at the culminating event. Please also note that when you shop at GIANT January - March and you can round up at the cash register, all proceeds will benefit our school food pantries. #ParklandPride

Huge Clothing/Toy Drive March 15 - Declutter your closets and plan to bring your donations to Parkland High School when you visit the Community Resource Fair. The Parkland High School Music Boosters are organizing a clothing drive from 9 AM - 12:30 PM in the parking lot adjacent to the high school band room (located on the right side of the school). Additionally, other items will be gladly accepted. Items accepted include:

Open Swim and Gym - The PHS Pool and Gym will be open to Parkland residents on the following Sundays thanks to a sponsorship by South Whitehall Township Parks and Recreation Department:  March 9th, 16th, 23rd, & 30th from 1-5 PM. Attendees MUST have an account in the Township's Online Recreation Portal to verify Parkland residency.  There is NO Registration and NO Fee for this program.  NOTE: This program is for recreational family and individual swimming and recreational pick-up basketball or volleyball. Organized group activities are NOT permitted during this time.

Congratulations are extended to  Lucy Tobia and Jaden Bulgin who qualified for the PTFCA Indoor State meet at Penn State.  Only the top 20 athletes in the entire state qualify in an event. There is only one division for indoor track. Lucy finished 12th in the 400m with a new school record of 58.07. Jaden Bulgin medaled by finishing 6th in the high jump with 6’3”.

Les Misérables opens April 2nd! Every year, the PHS spring musical is one of the best shows in town. This year, Les Misérables, the world’s longest-running musical and a true modern classic based on Victor Hugo's novel, featuring one of the most memorable scores of all time, will take the PHS stage from April 2nd to 6th, 2025 at PHS. Biomedical Science, Engineering and Computer Science at PHS - The newest edition of Dr. Mark Madson's Superintendent's Parkland Pride podcast is now available! Dr. Madson speaks with PHS teachers Laura Kowalski from the Biomedical Science program, Brian Kiernan, who teaches Cyber Security, and Bruce Lubak from the Technology Education/Engineering department. Each teacher is certified to teach Project Lead The Way's national curriculum in Biomedical Science, Engineering, and Computer Science (respectively). These courses and pathways include career exploration and hands-on learning labs that help students discover their passion for learning in each of these fields. The Education Policy and Leadership Center of Pennsylvania (EPLC) is launching an initiative to gather public input from across the Commonwealth regarding, “What education each child needs in today’s schools.” In 2023, the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court ruled that the state’s system for funding public education is unconstitutional. While that ruling primarily addressed funding inequities throughout the Commonwealth and the necessary additional funding to rectify the system, it also raised implications for how those funds are used to educate our children. This question shouldn't be answered solely by the legislature and governor. It’s a question that Pennsylvania residents should help answer, and their input should be shared with policymakers. To that end, EPLC is sponsoring a series of virtual Public Forums to gather Pennsylvania citizens' goals for public education. The forums will be facilitated by EPLC and held virtually as follows:

• Wednesday, April 2 - 9:30 am - 11:45 am
• Monday, April 14 - 6:30 pm - 8:45 pm
• Tuesday, April 15 - 1:00 pm - 3:15 pm

Clay and Caring, March 27, 6-8 PM in the PHS Cafeteria - Parkland High School’s Art Club, National Art Honor Society, and Interact Club invite you to Clay & Caring, a community dinner bringing people together for an evening of food and art to raise money for Parkland’s REACH Program. The REACH program provides essential support and resources, such as food assistance and school supplies, to our students.  Our talented art students have created beautiful, handmade ceramic bowls for this event! Upon arrival, you can purchase a unique handmade ceramic bowl ($15) or a paper bowl ($10) and enjoy a buffet of food generously donated by local restaurants and businesses. RSVP here.

Les Mis opens this week on the PHS stage - All performances are SOLD OUT proving that it is the hottest ticket in town!  Please do not try and buy tickets from people who comment on social media posts.  It has been reported that scammers are trying to sell fake tickets from comments on our posts.

The Rotary Club of Allentown West is planning a spectacular patriotic display during Memorial Day Weekend where hundreds of flags will adorn the PHS practice football field along North Cedar Crest Blvd. at the entrance to Parkland High School's beautiful campus.  Dedicate a flag to someone you love in their memory at this link and help the Rotary fill our field with flags!

Key Club is hosting MiniTHON at PHS on Friday, April 11, from 3 - 7 PM. MiniTHON is an event that includes games, dancing, food, and fun! MiniTHON is modeled after Penn State's THON Dance Marathon and is held to raise money for the research and fight against childhood cancer. All proceeds will be donated to Four Diamonds. We hope our students have a great time while supporting this worthy cause!

Celebrating the Class of 2025 - This past week, 41 Parkland senior athletes were recognized for committing to play their sport in college.   Friday is the last day to purchase Prom tickets during lunchtime in the cafeteria.  Speaking of Prom, volunteers, baked goods and prizes are needed for Parkland’s Post Prom Party, a precious tradition that keeps our seniors safe on Prom night. The Flags for Unity Memorial Day Weekend event promises to be quite spectacular. The Rotary Club of Allentown West will have 500 full-sized flags beautifully lit on the PHS practice field each night from Thursday through Monday of Memorial Day Weekend. In addition, Dr. Madson, Superintendent of Parkland Schools, will be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony, which will also feature a military flyover, a skydiving demonstration, and performances by Parkland's talented band and chorus students. Early Dismissal Next Friday/PHS Keystone Testing Starts Monday - All schools will dismiss early on Friday, May 16th with HS/MS at 11 AM and Elementary Schools dismissing at 11:45 AM.  PHS students taking the following tests will arrive to school at the regular time to take tests.  All other PHS students will be picked up by their regular bus on a 3-hour delay schedule (All Parkland Elementary and Middle schools will operate on a regular schedule May 12 - 15 and May 19-20):

May 12-13 - Literature Keystone (PHS 3 hour delay, except for test takers who will report at the normal time)

May 16 - Early Dismissal for all Parkland Schools (11 AM for PH/MS, 11:45 AM for Elementary Schools)

May 14-15 - Algebra Keystone (3 hour delay, except for test takers who will report at the normal time)

May 19-20 - Biology Keystone (3 hour delay, except for test takers who will report at the normal time)

Summer Meals Survey - Parkland School District has secured state approval for federal funding to offer a Summer Meal Program, providing free breakfast and lunch to students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. A package of 5 breakfast and 5 lunches would be offered for weekly pick up on one day each week during a specified timeframe over summer. We are also offering the option for families who do not qualify to purchase meals for their students for approximately $30 per week for the 10-meal package. This program would be offered by pre-registration on a weekly basis and can provide valuable support to our families, ensuring students have access to nutritious meals throughout the summer months. Please take our survey now so that we can gage your interest in the program by May 16.
