Students who participated in the Art Expressions Class made apple dumplings October 5th.
Mrs. Scheerer graciously allowed us to make apple dumplings in her room and bake them there.
This lesson was used as a primary introduction to working with slab building techniques in clay which will be introduced to Miss Mittl’s class later in the year. This will allow us to assess the students ability to manipulate the material and the level of their basic motor skills.
Organic Apples were picked from the local Mennonite farm near Kutztown. Mrs. Scheerer prepared 3 kitchens full of the ingredients and Ms. Robbins demonstrated using a traditional Amish recipe. Students from Miss Mittl’s class measured and stirred their ingredients, kneaded their dough, rolled their own crust, stuffed the centers of their chosen apple with butter and brown sugar. They then carefully wrapped their dough around the plump apple. Adding their own original touch, students beautifully sculpted designs at the top of their dumpling. Then they drizzled a fine amount of the special nutmeg sauce on top. The dumplings were baked and then later in the day the students enjoyed their hot apple dumplings with the perfect contrast of cold ice cream on top!
Thanks to all the teachers and aids who helped out for the event and brought kitchen tools
Extra special thanks to Mr. Joella, who provided many many rolling pins and all these photos of smiling faces!
