Welcome to 5th Grade!
Hello! My name is Mr. Derrick Green. I will be your child’s fifth grade “educational” coach.
This is my sixteenth year as an educator, having graduated from East Stroudsburg University with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, as well as a master’s degree in Elementary Education. Moreover, this is my thirteenth year in the Parkland School District and I am excited to share many interesting activities with this year’s roster of students!
If I may, I would like to share a little insight on what I expect and what you can expect from me. Homework will be a review of what was gone over that day. Typically, my homework should take about an hour. If it continuously takes more, simply contact me, I will be happy to offer advice or assist if needed. Please know that weekly homework, assessments, and events will be posted on this webpage. In addition, your child will be given a homework book to assist in organization. A daily check of the assignment book to see that homework is being recorded and completed will be beneficial to your child. Any teacher comment(s) will be written in the student’s assignment book, and homework assignments will be sent home in subject folders every night. Note- Homework is crucial and should be done nightly before coming to class the next day. There will be study sheets that will go home at least two days before any test. Generally, students who pay attention in class have little difficulty with most tests. Tests and other graded assignments will come home. Please review the test’s or graded assignment’s contents with your child before signing and returning it or them to school the next day.
I would recommend that your child bring to school three 1-subject spiral notebooks, a small pencil bag of supplies to be kept in his/her desk. Extra pencils and erasers, a pen, highlighter, and scissors would be useful. Try to discourage your child from bringing things to school that would be a distraction.
Thank you for your time and let me know if you have any questions. With school and home working together, I know my students can have a successful year. I look forward to working with you to progress your child’s talents and academics.
