A school-wide collection of gently worn shoes was started by 8th grader Seth Bartynski as part of a citizen’s advocacy assignment he received in teacher Patti Heavener’s social studies class. Students were asked to look up a cause that they believed in and get a petition going with the goal of getting legislation support. The goal of the project was for students to realize that people have the opportunity to influence laws. When doing his assigned research, Seth was astounded to learn that there were 3 billion people who did not own a pair of shoes throughout the world in 2009 and he decided to become part of a solution by asking his fellow students to donate shoes to an organization that specializes in giving shoes to those in need. Money collected during lunch paid for shipping expenses to the Soles4Souls distribution facility. Congratulations on a collection of more than 300 pairs of shoes!
