Vocal
Basic music skills, concepts, and techniques thread continuously throughout music lessons for the duration of the school year. Thematic and integrated units correlated with subjects and topics studied in the regular classroom demonstrates to students how arts are in every day life. Mrs. Feher hopes that all student will recognize that elements of music can be found in almost everything in life.

Grades K, 1, and 2

During the first three years of music class, students spend much time learning to keep a steady beat, learning to sing to tune, and build a repertoire of songs and movement activities. Additionally, students relate music to stories, poems, and their communities.

Grade 3

During third grade, a great deal of time is spent preparing students to become members of band or orchestra, and a choral ensemble in the fourth grade. Through the activities listed below, students begin to understand and acquire the necessary skills for these ensembles:

  • Instrument Family Learning Centers- this unit utilizes centers using traditional listening centers and technology to identify the many musical instruments played throughout the world.
  • Maestro Moderato and Music Ace- this unit engages the students in learning to read and write both rhythmic and melodic notation.
  • Dance/Movement Activities

Grade 4

During the fourth grade year, student sing, play, and dance to music from the various regions of the United States culminated in the dance/movement activities. Additional activities include:

  • Sea Shanties
  • Play parties
  • Hoedowns
  • Cowboy/campfire songs
  • Native Americans/Inuit music
  • Hawaiian island

Grade 5

During the fifth grade year, students sing, play and dance to music from the numerous time periods in American history. Activities include:

  • Music from Colonial America, Civil War and symbols of America
  • Composers – this unit focus on researching world famous composers utilizing technology.
  • Dance/Movement Activities
  • Winter and Spring Choral ensembles

Winter and Spring Choral Ensembles

All students in the fifth grade will participate in both the Winter and Spring choral ensembles. These choral ensembles are part of the regular music curriculum. Students prepare this music during regular music classes and participate in culminating performances in both December and April. These performances allow the students to showcase their musical knowledge, skills, and talents.

Dance/Movement Activities

Students in grades three through five participate in a dance/movement experience that takes place during several hour long combined music and physical education classes. The activities correlate to social studies and science topics studied in the regular classroom.

  • Country line dancing
  • Native American dancing
  • Hawaii theme dances

5th

  • Basic swing and jitterbug

  • Jigs from 1700′s
  • Polkas from 1700′s
  • Reels from 1700′s
