Parkland School District Efforts to Reduce the Spread of the H1N1 Virus

Parkland maintains constant communication with the District’s Chief School Physician, the Lehigh County Emergency Management System and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.  This communication allows the district to be aware of the H1N1 situation locally, regionally, and statewide.

Parkland has been educating the community as follows:

Community
Published information concerning the seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus in the district and building newsletters and web site.

Students
Provided TV broadcasts during building announcements to the students on proper and frequent hand washing and coughing-in-your-sleeve techniques as well as used multi-media presentations to encourage proper hygiene.

Staff
Held staff meeting in each of the buildings to review flu prevention and good hygiene reminders, including frequent hand washing.

In addition, the District has:

Been monitoring daily attendance so that we will know if a significant portion of our student and staff population have been infected.

Provided hand sanitizer in large group areas such as computer labs, science labs, cafeterias, and fitness rooms.

Provided the custodial staff with appropriate disinfectants for their areas of responsibility and increased the frequency of cleaning as appropriate.
