The 9th Annual Parkland Festival of the Arts (FOTA) will occur May 17-19, 2012 on the grounds of Parkland High School. Two free events, the High School Art show and the Family Consumer Science “Art of Living” exhibit which features free food tastings and fashion displays made by the Family & Consumer Science students, will kick start the weekend’s festivities by opening to the public on Thursday evening at 6 PM. A third free event, the PHS Chorus Concert will top off the evening and begin at 7 PM. The community at large is invited to attend these free events.

Friday evening the Festival of the Arts will be featuring two separate events. The Parkland Stardust Diner, a throw back to the days of singing waitresses on roller skates, poodle skirts and comfort food will have two seatings in the Auditorium lobby. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. The box office will be open for “Diner” tickets weekdays from May 14 – May 17 between the hours of 10Am – 1PM. This event sold out last year, so please get your tickets early. That same night, beginning at 6:00PM there will be the annual FOTA Battle of the Bands held in the cafeteria. Tickets are $5.00 and available at the door.

Saturday morning, May 19, the annual “Artists on the Quad” event will begin at 10 AM which includes kiosks that are spread out on the high school lawn that will be filled with art, food, entertainment and local crafters who will be selling their wares. The PHS Jazz Band kicks off a day filled with musical entertainment under the Festival tent on the lawn. The auditorium will host local dance schools who will perform recitals throughout the day. Festivalgoers will find themselves surrounded by delicious foods provided by various middle school and high school clubs. There will be live music outside all day and performances inside the rotunda where passersby enter to enjoy k-12 artwork displays throughout the hallways of the building. It is always a beautiful day no matter what the weather brings, and the event occurs rain or shine.

A Disney character parade performed by PHS Performing Arts Club students will march around the front of the High School at 2:30 PM. Parents are invited to bring their cameras, throughout the day there will be photo opportunities to take pictures with a Disney character.

Each year FOTA awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior pursuing a career in the Arts. The art and basket raffle supports this effort. Artwork and Baskets are donated by local artists, PTOs and friends of FOTA. Don’t miss out on the amazing “PARKLAND GIRL “ couture. (Our take on the popular American Girl dolls) All of the outfits are handmade by Parkland Staff and Friends of the Festival. Featured in this collection will be a PHS Cheerleader uniform and a PHS Trojan Marching Band uniform. The Art and Basket Raffle, along with the Parkland Girl collection, will be on display Thursday through Saturday during the Festival Events. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and winners will be drawn at 3:30 PM on Saturday, May 19th.

In April, 2008, veteran Parkland teacher John Ritter was diagnosed with a blood cancer. After months of chemotherapy John went into remission. This past February John relapsed. Since diagnosis, John’s doctors have told him that the only lasting treatment for his cancer is a bone marrow transplant. To date, no compatible donor has been found. Colleagues from Parkland have organized a marrow registry drive schedule for March 19th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM during The Festival of the Arts at the Parkland High School. As new potential donors register, possibly John or one of the many leukemia/lymphoma patients needing a transplant will find a match.

Registering is easy and can be done at the drive or by requesting a kit from DKMS http://www.dkmsamericas.org/ or www.marrow.org. For more information click here.
