New Lunch Menu Guidelines Update- Fruits and Vegetables – Elementary Schools
Earlier this year, the Federal government approved new nutritional requirements for the National School Lunch Program to be implemented in 2012-2013. We are happy to announce that the meal choices provided during the last several years by the Parkland Food Service Department have met or gone beyond the new mandated guidelines for 2012-2013.
The Parkland Food Service Department has been providing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and will continue to add more variety this school year. Effective this 2012 –13 school year, under the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act, every student purchasing a school lunch is required to select a fruit/juice or vegetable for the lunch tray to be a reimbursable meal. Fruits and vegetables have always been offered but were optional. A student now needs to select a fruit or vegetable to buy a lunch at $2.15. If he/she does not, the meal will become ala carte and charged accordingly, even if a child has been approved for a free or reduced lunch.
The Parkland Food Service Department staff is excited about the new changes because it focuses on healthy eating. The staff has been trained to encourage students to select the proper items to complete the lunch.
Please encourage your children to select a fruit or vegetable each day to complete their meal. The elementary lunch price is $2.15. The ala carte total may exceed that amount if a vegetable or fruit is not selected.
If you have any questions concerning the lunch menu, please contact the Parkland School District Food Service department at 610-351-5671 or email holmest@parklandsd.org
