May Highlights

Congratulations to our recent “Letter of Intent” honorees.  On Friday, May 8th ten of our student athletes made their college intentions official.  Thomas Cafagna, Dennis Klusaritz, Jr, and Mark Winkelspecht will be playing lacrosse at Chesnut Hill College.  Allen P. Nist will continue playing lacrosse at New York Institute of Technology.  Jon Thielen will be swimming for the University of Maryland, Sara Steinagel Millersville University and Marielle O’Connor, Seton Hall.  Ian Heist has chosen the University of Pittsburgh to continue his wrestling career.  Sequeena Thomas is returning to Texas to play basketball at Sam Houston State University and Daniel Klem will play baseball for the Explorers of LaSalle University.

Recently the LVIAC selected the spring scholar athletes.  These athletes are selected by their schools based on their academic achievement 40%, their athletic achievement 40%, and their involvement in extra-curricular and community activities 20%.  Parkland’s selections were: Baseball; Jonathan Gabriel, Lacrosse; Justin Muser, Girl’s Soccer; Erica Murphy, Softball; Kyle deSandes-Moyer, Tennis; Jordan Silberg, Boy’s Track and Field; Cameron McConnell, Girl’s Track and Field; Elizabeth Skinker and Boy’s Volleyball; Chris Busack.  Erica Murphy, Kyle deSandes-Moyer, Jordon Silberg, Cameron McConnell and Chris Busack were selected as the LVIAC Scholar Athlete as well.  What an outstanding accomplishment for our spring student athletes.

On Wednesday May 27th we added seven inductees to the Parkland Hall of Fame.  Deanna Stinner; 2008 All-State Volleyball player, Breanna Mazalewski; 2007 & 2008 All-State Volleyball player, Piotr Kuczaj; 2008 All-State Volleyball player; Jaime Malandra; 7 time P.I.A.A. State Swimming Champion, Clint Miller; 2007 All-State Football player, Jaleel Clark; 2007 & 2008 All-State Football player, and 2006 P.I.A.A 4A State Champion Girls basketball coach Patti Heffner.  Congratulations to this outstanding 2009 Hall of Fame inductees.

Mark your calendar:  Thursday, July 16th Fall Athletic Physicals will be given at Parkland High School free of charge.  Boys physical will be given from 8 AM – 10:30 AM and the girls from 10:30 AM to 1 PM.  All physicals must be turned in to the athletic office by August 7th, 2009.

All of our spring sports are currently participating in league, district or state competition.  Updates and final records will be included in next month’s newsletter.

Congratulations to Jeff Geisel for his recent appointment as the next Parkland School District Director of Athletics.

April Highlights

Winter Wrap

Congratulations to Sequeena Thomas and Jaleel Clark for making Third Team All-State in Basketball.

Spring Sports

The Parkland Boy’s Baseball team has rebounded from a 0-2 start to get to 5-2 on the season, including a 3-0 LVC record.  Girl’s Softball currently is undefeated in league play and 8-1 overall.  The team had a successful 4-1 record while on their trip to Disney World.  Boy’s and Girl’s Track remains undefeated at press time with their highly anticipated meet against Liberty to come on April 30th.   
Girl’s Soccer is off to a strong 7-3 start including a 5-2 league record.  The Boy’s Tennis team is off to an undefeated 10-0 match record.  The team finished second in the Phoenixville Invitational with Andrew Schwepfinger taking home the individual championship.  Boys Volleyball is currently 8-0 in league play and ranked 3rd in the latest Pennsylvania Volley Coaches Association rankings.  The team captured the Hempfield Black Knight Invitational title and finished second in the Northeastern Bobcat Invitational tournament.  Boys Lacrosse is enjoying a competitive season at 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the league. 

The JV Powerlifting team recently won the Lehigh Valley Conference meet held at Orefield Middle School.  Congratulations to junior forwards Emily Schneider and Tara Huber, who recently moved into the top 10 in scoring all-time for PHS Girl’s Soccer.   Emily has tallied 27 goals and 19 assists in her career for 73 points.  Tara Huber has tallied 28 goals and 18 assists in her career for 74 points. 

Upcoming Events

Friday May 8th will be our next college-signing event for student-athletes.  On Wednesday May 27th Parkland will be hosting the annual Hall of Fame and Athletic Awards night.  July 16th is the date for the school hosted athletic physicals.  Physicals are scheduled from 8:00-1:00pm.  You can print out physical forms in advance on the Parkland Athletics web page.

March Highlights

Winter Sports Wrap

The Boy’s Basketball season came to an end at Villanova with a loss to York in the state quarterfinals.  The Trojans capped a 26-4 season highlighted by their two state tournament wins and District XI championship.  The Girl’s Basketball team battled through adversity during the year but still managed a winning record at 14-10.  The team’s season ended in the District XI playoffs.   

Boy’s and Girl’s Swimming and Diving completed their season with the state championships at Bucknell University.  The Lady Trojan won the District XI championship and finished fifth overall in the state.  Jaime Malandra won gold in the 200 freestyle and silver in the 500 freestyle.  Caitlin Zajko placed sixth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 backstroke.  Freshman Erica Reifinger was fifth in the 500 freestyle.   The 400 freestyle relay team took eighth place.  Erika Bilenki placed fifth in the diving competition.  The Parkland Boy’s finished runner-up in the District and wound up 17th of 55 teams in the state tournament.  Congratulations to Demitri Karedis’ sixth place finish in the 100 freestyle. 

The wrestling team completed a successful season by sending four wrestlers to Hershey for the individual state tournament.  Mike Fake (103), Mike Ottinger (140), Ian Heist (145), and Wade Rivera (152) all qualified for the state tournament.  Sophomore Mike Fake placed eighth at 103 pounds. 

The LVIAC recently announced their Scholar-Athletes for the Winter season of the 2008-2009 school year.  The criteria to select athletes was 40% academic, 40% athletic, and 20% extra-curricular and community involvement.  Parkland is proud to announce the following athletes received nominations in their respective sport, Jon Ward (Boy’s Basketball), Sequeena Thomas (Girl’s Basketball), Sarah Holko (Cheerleading), and Joshua Heft (Wrestling).  Boy’s Swimmer Nicholas Gisolfi and Girl’s Swimmer Jaime Malandra won the LVIAC Scholar Athlete Award in their sport. 

Spring Sports

We now look ahead to the Spring sports season that is underway.  Spring sports have had a turnout of over 860 athletes try out for different sports.  Try-outs are now completed and the teams are beginning to scrimmage and look forward to the regular season.  We look forward to another successful Spring season of athletics from our teams this year.

Spring Sports:

Spring sports including Track & Field, Softball, Baseball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis, and Boys Volleyball begin March 2nd. 
All prospective spring sport athletes must have a physical prior to try-outs to participate.
The Girl’s Soccer team continues helping the community as they prepare for another successful season.  The team recently collected a half-ton of food and clothing for the local food bank and Salvation Army.  The team annually runs in a 5k breast cancer event and coaches youth soccer players on Saturday’s in the fall.

Winter Sports:

At the time of press, the Boys Basketball team is entering the LVIAC playoffs as the number one seed after wrapping up a 20-2 regular season.  The Lady Trojans basketball team wrapped up a 13-9 regular season and awaits the start of the District playoffs. Congratulations to Jaleel Clark, Matthew Muhr, and Sequeena Thomas for making LVIAC All-Star rosters.

The Parkland girls defeated Emmaus in their highly anticipated swimming meet on January 27th capping off a perfect season that gave the Lady Trojans the LVIAC title.  The boys fell to Emmaus but had a strong regular season finishing runner-up in the conference. 

The wrestling squad once again made the District XI team tournament.  The squad finished the season strong and defeated Liberty in round one before falling to eventual champion Northampton (ranked #5 nationally) 40-25 in the semi-finals.  Next up for the wrestling team is individual districts February 20th at Liberty High School.

Congratulations go out to Rico Goldstone, grade 11, who qualified for the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Track Meet in the 60 meter dash and the 200 meter dash.

Congratulations to the Parkland Varsity Cheerleading squad for finishing 2nd at the District XI Cheerleading competition.  The stunt team consisting of seniors Kayla Persichetti, Lauren Sniscak, Casey Fennell, Ashley Glick, and Paige McFarland also took 2nd place.

January 2009

  Athletes Sign Letters of Intent

Congratulations to the first group of student athletes who signed their “Letter of Intent” to continue their athletic career at the collegiate level: 
Erika Bilenki, Diving, -  University of Delaware. 
Jaime Malandra, Swimming—University of Notre Dame. 
Jamie Motsko, Softball—Millersville University. 
Elliott Shephard, Lacrosse—Dominican College. 
Deanna Stinner, Softball—St. Joseph’s University.
Caitie Zajko, Swimming—Duquesne University.

The next “Letter of Intent” signing ceremony will be Wednesday, February 4th at 3:30 pm in the high school auditorium. 

Big 33 Honors

Jaleel Clark, one of the athletes to sign at the February 4th ceremony, was recently selected to participate in the Big 33 Football All-Star game pitting the best of Pennsylvania against the best of Ohio.

Winter Sports

Winter sports are in full swing with all of our teams; boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and swimming, positioning themselves for league and district competitions.  The boy’s basketball team won the talent laden Wildwood Classic bracket that included Camden Catholic, Communication Tech, and Philadelphia Catholic League representative Archbishop Ryan.  Wade Rivera, Mike Ottinger, Ian Heist, and Mike Fake placed in the King of the Mountain and/or the Escape the Rock tournament.

Both the boys and girls swim team are currently undefeated with the highly anticipated meet with Emmaus taking place on the 27th of January.  In Girls Basketball, Sequeena Thomas has been a positive addition helping the girls to achieve a 4-3 league and 6-5 record overall.

Spring Sport Physicals

It is hard to believe but Spring Sports:  Track & Field, Softball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse,
Baseball, Girls Soccer, Boys Tennis and Boys Volleyball, begin March 2nd.  The Parkland School District will be offering free physicals
Saturday February 7th from 8am to noon at the High School Athletic wing.  All spring sport
candidates must have a physical prior to try-outs to participate.
District XI Tournaments

Parkland will host the District XI Coaches

Association Junior High Wrestling tournament on Saturday February 14th and Monday February 16th.  In addition District XI Swimming meets will be held at Parkland on the 27th and 28th of
February.

December 2008

The 2008 Parkland fall sports season was filled with victories and team championships.  The fall varsity teams won 100 contests with only 20 defeats and two ties, an impressive 82% winning percentage.  They won 4 LVIAC Championships, 2 LVIAC Tournament Championships, 3 District XI team championships and had 1 District XI 3A Cross-country Champion in Matt Gillette.  Our golf, tennis and soccer teams also advanced into PIAA state competitions before their outstanding seasons came to an end.  Congratulations to the players and coaches for their outstanding efforts this fall season.

Golf:

  • 2 LVIAC All-stars:  Brandon Davis and Jordan Keller
  • LVIAC Tournament and League Champions, District XI Team Champion, PIAA Eastern Champions and 4th place finish in the state finals.

Cross-country:

  • Matt Gillette – District XI Champion and 19th place PIAA state medalist.

Field Hockey:

  • LVIAC Honorable Mention:  Emily Schneider and Arialle Hess. 
  • Coach Donna Hibshman will be coaching one of the Pennsylvania teams participating in the PA/NJ Angel 34 Classic.

Boys Soccer:

  • The boys’ soccer team rebounded from a 5-4-1 start to go unbeaten in the next 11 games of the season culminating with a 1-0 overtime win against Freedom to capture the team’s second consecutive District XI AAA Championship! 
  • Bryan Knouse and Ryan Wetherhold were selected to the LVIAC All Star team and goalkeeper Garrett Bleiler was named honorable mention. 
  • The team finished 15-5-2 after falling to Lower Merion (ranked #8 nationally) in the PIAA playoffs.

Girls Volleyball:

  • District XI Silver Medalist, LVIAC Champions, Ranked 3rd in the Pennsylvania Coaches poll, undefeated at home are indicators of the outstanding season experienced by our girls volleyball team.
  • District XI First team:  Deanna Stinner and Breanna Mazalewski
                  Second team:  Amanda Dougherty
  • LVIAC First team:  Deanna Stinner and Breanna Mazalewski
             Second team:  Amanda Dougherty

November 2008
Another Outstanding Fall for Parkland Athletic Teams

Parkland Girls Tennis:

  • LVIAC Team League (11-0) (13-0 Overall) and Tournament Champions
  • Martha Wood came in third for District Singles Championships.
  • Liana Mandel and Megan Wylie won the gold in District XI doubles competition held at West End Racquet Club.
  • Parkland girls are seeded number one in District XI Team tennis.

Parkland Boys Soccer:

The boys soccer team ended the regular season with an 8 game unbeaten streak and missed the LVIAC playoffs by just one point despite a 5-4-1 start.  The team ended 9-3 in league play and is currently 12-4-2 overall.  The team is preparing for the District XI tournament.  Bryan Knouse was the league’s leading scorer and joined Ryan Wetherhold as First Team LVIAC All Stars.

Parkland Golf:

Coach Jeff Bartman led his team to the local golf scene hat trick by winning the LVIAC League and Tournament Championship, as well as the team District XI gold.

 Boys/Girls Cross Country:

The boys cross country team ended the regular season as the LVIAC Dual Meet Champions with an undefeated 12-0 record.  The girls finished fourth in the league meet with a 9-3 record.  Helen Stanley, Matt Gillette, Alex Macri and Tyler Ranft were named to the LVIAC Cross Country All-Stars.

Field Hockey:

On Sunday, September 19th, approximately 32 players and coaches and 16 parents and family members participated in the Angle 34 5K Walk.  The Angel 34 Foundation was developed by Nicole Sheriff, a field hockey player from Northampton High School who was diagnosed with cancer.  During Nicole’s battle she faced many treatments that took its toll on her body.  She found that when she had an ICEE, she was able to take her medications with fewer complications.  She made it her mission to place ICEE machines in chemotherapy clinics across the United States.

The Parkland Field Hockey walking team raised over $1000 for the Angel 34 Foundation.  Additionally players made “Cheer cards” for children in the area who are currently receiving treatment for cancer.

On Sunday, November 16th, two seniors, Chelsey Talheim and Karie Vassallo will represent Parkland Field Hockey in the Angel 34 Classic.  The games will involve players from District XI who will join forces and play teams from New Jersey.  The games will be played at Emmaus High School.

Girls Volleyball:

The girls will be competing in the LVIAC Championships the last week of October.  The girls won the East/West Challenge at State College and finished 5th in the Garden State Challenge losing in the playoffs to #21 nationally ranked Mercy Academy.  This team qualified for districts earlier than any other team in program history and was undefeated at home for the season in Lehigh valley Conference play.

Football:

With three games to go the football team is in position to qualify for District XI play.  Ending their regular season with Dieruff, Emmaus and Whitehall, the Trojans are building momentum entering the tough District XI 4A Championships.

Important Events/Dates to remember:

Winter sports begin try-outs Monday November 17th.  All physicals must be returned to the High School Athletic Office by Thursday, November 13th to be eligible for participation.

Sunday November 23rd the Parkland Swimming and Diving Booster Club will be hosting a Meet the Coaches Night at the High School in Room D133 at 7:00 PM.

Fall sports are in full swing.  As of Sept. 15th our teams have the following records:

Volleyball; Varsity-3-0 ,  JV- 2-0 , Orefield MS-  2-1, Springhouse MS- 4-1

Welcome boys lacrosse to the list of Parkland’s PIAA sponsored sports.  Congratulations to Geoff Chenworth; head coach, Jeff Seitzinger; assistant coach and Ray Kendrick, jv coach for their selection as the 2008-2009 coaching staff.  Coach Chenworth met with potential candidates to review goals, expectations and off season opportunities on September 9th at the high school.  In addition the newly formed Boys Lacrosse Booster club met to discuss their plans for the upcoming season.  The booster club will be sponsoring the “First Annual John Steinmann Memorial Golf Tournament” Sunday October, 12th at Willow Brook Golf Course.  For information contact Jodi Scanlon @ 610 657-5214 or Charlie Incalcatera @ 484 515-4119.
