The Parkland School District’s (the District) Act 1 index for 2013-14 is 1.7%. To permit an increase in the rate of tax by more than the index without seeking voter approval, Act 1 permits the District to apply for exception(s) from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Upon receipt of the District’s request, PDE determines whether or not to approve the request for exceptions. Based upon the Preliminary Budget adopted by the Parkland Board of School Directors on February 19, 2013, the District has decided to apply for approval of exception(s). To comply with the requirements of Act 1, the District, at least one week prior to submitting its request for approval to PDE, is publishing in a newspaper of general circulation and on the District’s publicly accessible internet site this notice of its intent to seek PDE approval. If PDE grants the exception(s), PDE will determine the dollar amount of the expenditure for which the exception(s) is sought and the tax rate increase to fund the exception(s). The increased tax revenues generated as a result of the PDE approval of the exception(s) may be used to balance the District’s final 2013-14 budget.
